We’re Here to Help

At Dr. Sarah Orthodontics & Aesthetics, we understand that orthodontic emergencies can be a stressful and sometimes painful experience.

That's why Dr. Sarah and our team are here to help people in Virginia Beach (like you) navigate through any orthodontic emergency you may encounter while wearing braces.

Here to Help

The following orthodontic emergencies and their treatments are listed in the order from least severe to most severe.

Fortunately, many issues can be resolved at home or with a quick visit to our office. Only the most severe emergencies require immediate attention by Dr. Sarah.

Here are some basic things that can happen during orthodontic treatment.

  • General Soreness

When you first get your braces, you may experience general soreness in your mouth, and your teeth may feel tender.

This is completely normal and should go away within a few days.

To alleviate any discomfort, you can rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and take over-the-counter pain medication as recommended.

  • Poking Wires

Sometimes, a wire may come loose and start poking the inside of your mouth.

If this happens, you can try using a small piece of orthodontic wax to cover the wire and get rid of the pain.

If the wire is still poking your mouth, contact our office immediately, and we'll schedule an appointment to repair the wire and take care of any irritation.

  • Loose Brackets

A bracket is the small metal or ceramic piece that's attached to each tooth with a special adhesive. If a bracket becomes loose or detached from a tooth, it can delay your orthodontic treatment progress.

If this happens, contact our Virginia Beach office immediately, and we'll schedule an appointment to reattach the bracket and make any necessary adjustments.

  • Loose Wires

Sometimes, a wire may become loose or detach from a bracket, causing it to poke the inside of your mouth or become misaligned. If this happens, Dr. Sarah recommends using a small piece of orthodontic wax to cover the wire and ease the soreness.

If the wire is still poking your mouth or causing pain, contact our office immediately, and we'll schedule an appointment to repair the wire.

  • Loose Appliances

If you have any other orthodontic appliances, such as a spring or a palate expander, they may become loose or detach from your braces.

If this happens, contact Dr. Sarah immediately, and we'll schedule an appointment to repair or replace the appliance.
